ABOUT THE DOOR IN THE WALL, INC. (DITW)
HISTORY

The Door In The Wall, Inc. was founded by Jim and Barbara Blair in 1994.  Their youngest daughter, Jennifer, contracted spinal meningitis when she was 2 months old and uses a wheelchair for her primary mobility. The organization was started to share resource information with other families that deal with disability on a day-to-day basis.  They felt the best way to reach more families was public access television.  The first television show aired September 1994 in San Antonio .  In December of that same year they started the weekly radio broadcast of disability news. In addition to these broadcasts, they noticed a need in the community for adapted sports and social events.  Free special events were added to the schedule (See Events Page) These programs continued until 2005 when Jim Blair became very ill and passed away in May of that year.  Barbara Blair, with the help of close friends and many volunteers, has kept the program going and is currently spreading disability news through this web site, video clips, the DITW Newsletter, and during the  events.  DITW is an AVO.  (All Volunteer Organization)

It's what we do in the here and now that will make a difference in the
then and there.

Danny is originally from West Texas.  He attended and graduated from New Mexico Military Institute (Army Commission) and Angelo State University and served as a U.S. military advisor throughout Central and South American until he suffered an injury during an assignment and was medically retired as a quadriplegic.  He started the Texas Disabled Veterans Association to better inform and unite the disabled community.    tdva.net
Judith, from San Antonio, is the Director of Playmakers, an organization that enables adults with cognitive disabilities to express their creativity and life experiences through theater.  She founded Playmakers in 2000 after a successful career in professional theater.  The troupe performs for local, state and even national audiences and inspires children with disabilities to see new creative options for themselves.
The Door in the Wall (1949)

Harm Robinson was the inspiration for Marguerite deAngeli's book, The Door In The Wall.  He was a friend with a disability of the deAngeli family who participated with their musical evenings and he suggested to Marguerite the need for a book about a child dealing with a handicap. Robin, the hero of The Door in the Wall, struggles with his lameness in thirteenth century England. He is assisted in his search for self-worth by Brother Luke, a monk who tells him, "It is better to have crooked legs than a crooked spirit." Robin, through his personal bravery, is able to save a besieged castle, proving Brother Luke's advice to be true: "Thou hast only to follow the wall far enough and there will be a door in it.".  deAngeli remarks that she sought to show children in this story that, "It's not who you are that counts, it's what you do with what you have that matters."

REMEMBER: 37 BRAINS ARE OFTEN BETTER THAN ONE!
"The only limits that a person believes they have are in their own mind.  I try to lead by example, this philosophy served me well in the military and I know it works in everyday life."

DREAM, TAKE ACTION, REPEAT!
"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals."

We are sad to report that our dear friend, Ed Pryor, passed away.
He will be dearly missed.

Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it.  My optimism then, does not rest on the absence of evil, but on a glad belief in the preponderance of good and a willing effort always to cooperate with the good that it may prevail.
